Much is told by the look in one’s face

Physiognomy (the art of determining moral character by facial appearance) is alive and well in America.

The Herald’s June 24 editorial cartoon is a perfect example of the art. The cartoon seeks to show a corrupt connivance between the U.S. Supreme Court and America’s corporate giants. It does this by depicting the face of a Supreme Court justice.

I knew instinctively: This is the face of a corrupt conniver. The face literally reeked of moral depravity — one could see it. It was The Face of Evil.

I don’t quite know how physiognomy works. However, I do know that shrewd con artists use it to their advantage, “... but he looked so honest.” I also know that mothers are especially good at the art, “ ... you just have a guilty look on your face.” If only we could have all-mother juries.
