Dist. 70 wants to fill school board position

Candidates are sought to fill a two-year term vacancy on the Libertyville Elementary District 70 school board that will be created as Joy Schwerman steps down. Schwerman has served on the board for 18 years but decided to avoid a conflict of interest when the district hires her son-in-law, Lorenzo Cervantes as the first dean of students for Highland Middle School. While Schwerman could legally remain on the board, she would need to refrain from voting on any issues involving Cervantes. Candidates must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old, residents of Illinois and District 70 for at least one year, registered voters and may not be school board members for other districts, or school treasurers. Interested candidates can pick up an application at the Education Resource Center, 1381 W. Lake St., Libertyville, and can call the ERC with questions at (847) 362-9695. They are asked to complete the application and return it with a current resume to the ERC by 4 p.m. on Aug. 1. Interviews will begin in early August and a new member is expected to be appointed in time for the Aug. 22 meeting.
