CodeRED System Comes To Lombard

The system is web-based, meaning that those residents or businesses who wish to be contacted by the Village for emergency or other situations, will need to go to the Village of Lombard website (www.villageoflombard.org) and sign up for the notification via the CodeRED link, located on the front page. Users will be asked to input their contact information, including name, address and phone number(s), as well as which type of alerts they would like to be notified of: 1) general and/or 2) emergency notifications only. By creating this account, residents and businesses alike will have an extra communication device in place to learn about potential situations that they may be effected by.

Lombard Fire Marshal Chuck Riforgiate, commented that the system will only be as good as the telephone number database supporting it. “If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called,” stated Riforgiate. “One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is that it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own telephone number(s) directly into the system's database, which is an extremely important feature,” he added.

Lombard has been looking at notification systems for several years. The needs of the Village and the services offered by CodeRED seem to be a perfect match, said Carl Goldsmith, Director of Lombard's Public Works Department, who will also utilize the system to inform residents about potential flooding and other emergency-type situations.

“CodeRED allows geographically-based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in any given situation,” said Goldsmith. “The system works for cell phones too, but we'll need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages,” he added.

All residents and businesses should register, as well as individuals who have unlisted phone numbers or who have changed their phone numbers or addresses within the past year. Anyone wishing to be contacted via a cell phone must also register online in the system.

Questions regarding the CodeRED system may be directed to (630) 620-5740. Anyone who would like to participate without internet access, call (630) 620-5718 and a staff member will register you.
