Something else to like about President Reagan

There were plenty of things to like about President Reagan. Here's another: In 1984 he declared July National Ice Cream Month and July 17 as National Ice Cream Day.

Reagan may have enjoyed an occasional ice cream cone, but he made this special recognition because he knew it was a huge industry that affected a lot of workers, particularly in the dairy business.

I look at it in simpler terms as a good time to remind readers we have great ice cream around here — from Colonial, Oberweis, Batavia Creamery, Kimmer's Place, Graham's and Cold Stone Creamery to all points in between that offer this wonderful summer treat.

National ice cream statistics tell us more than 90 percent of American households consume ice cream. Also, each one of us, on average, gulps down 23.2 quarts of ice cream a year.

No electronic landfills: Over the last 10 years, I've dropped off plenty of TVs, VCRs and other equipment at the electronics recycling days set up for Kane County. There's another recycling drop-off day Saturday at the Kane County Circuit Clerk office on Randall Road in St. Charles. It's hard to imagine people still throw electronic stuff out in with regular garbage, rather than recycle. It continues to pile up in our landfills but that will come to end next year when Illinois enacts its ban against electronics in landfills. Garbage companies won't be able to take this stuff, and electronics manufacturers are going to be responsible for contracting with a recycling company to remove their old devices and stop contaminating landfills. Goodwill and #8216;Dine': When you donate a bag of gently used items from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Goodwill Store and Donation Center at 450 N. Randall Road in Batavia, you can participate in the #8220;Dine and Donate#8221; barbecue. The event is sponsored by the Food Network, and food will be prepared by chef's from the network's #8220;Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives#8221; program. More details are available at amazinggoodwill.com.He had some fun: In addition to being a good sport by participating in a flash mob dance in Geneva during Swedish Days, Pat Hofstetter also has a good sense of humor.Hofstetter, the owner of CPR Printing in St. Charles, is probably best known for consistently winning the 60 Men Who Cook fundraiser in Geneva each spring. He's also been a big supporter of Geneva High School sports over the years.I poked a little fun at him last week in saying I was afraid he was going to hurt himself in the flash mob dance. He responded with an email note, saying it was the most fun he's had in years. He attached a photo of a person covered in bandages and in traction on a hospital bed. His message noted he was #8220;nearly fully recovered#8221; from the flash mob episode.dheun@sbcglobal.net
