Police chase ends in suspect's crash death

EAST ST. LOUIS — Illinois State Police are investigating a southwestern Illinois police chase that ended with the suspect's death when he crashed his car.

Authorities say the chase early Wednesday lasted only a few minutes, going from Brooklyn into East St. Louis.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Brent Beltz says the driver was wanted for aggravated assault of a police officer. But it isn't immediately clear if the alleged assault happened before the crash or during it.

The 39-year-old driver killed in the wreck hasn't been identified.

Authorities say the suspect's car hit a utility pole and flipped several times, partially ejecting the driver. The overturned car then landed on top of him.
