Residents invited to help pave way for riverwalk extension

Continuing a long-standing Naperville tradition, the Riverwalk Commission invites residents to help lay the bricks that will replace the existing asphalt pathway along the Naperville Riverwalk west to the Jefferson Avenue Bridge. Community members are invited to participate in this tradition from 9 a.m. to noon every Wednesday beginning July 6 and lasting through July 27.

In 1981, Naperville residents gathered to lay the bricks of the original Riverwalk. The community came together again in 2000 to build the Riverwalk extension from Washington Street to Hillside Road. This improvement to the Riverwalk is being built using recycled bricks from the Riverwalk Phase I Rehabilitation Project, as well as other projects including the reconstruction of the Gregory Gazebo and the Sesquicentennial Overlook.

“Every inch of the Naperville Riverwalk was built by the community for the community,” Riverwalk Commission Chairman Jeff Havel said. “We're excited to continue this tradition of bringing together different generations of Naperville residents to work together to make the Riverwalk even bigger and better than it already is.”

Participants will gather at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion, located southwest of the Centennial Beach Parking Lot. Parking is available at the Grand Pavilion as well. To sign up, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Lynnette Hoole at lhoole@napervilleparks.org or (630) 848-3606.
