City sirens undergoing maintenance week of July 11

Each of the City's 25 Sirens Will be Activated Individually During Evaluation

The city of Naperville informs residents and interested parties that annual maintenance on the city's 25 outdoor warning sirens will take place throughout the week of July 11.

During this time, the city's warning siren contractor Braniff will activate each of the city's outdoor warning sirens individually for evaluation. Residents should not be alarmed if they hear the sirens going off during periods of calm weather. Audible testing each day will only take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The city anticipates the routine maintenance to be complete by July 15.

“This annual maintenance is important to ensure the city's outdoor warning sirens function properly at critical moments,” said Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Nelson. “This year's scope of work includes maintenance to help make our warning siren system more secure and to ensure that each siren's radio, which both receives commands and reports the siren's status to public safety personnel continuously, is working properly.”

The city reminds residents that outdoor warning sirens are activated for the purpose of alerting people who are outdoors that a tornado warning has been issued for the Naperville area. When the steady tone of an outdoor warning siren is heard during severe weather, it is imperative to find shelter immediately. Residents are always encouraged to monitor their preferred local media outlet, NOAA Weather Radio or the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov for the latest weather forecasts.
