Elgin police investigate car found in river
Elgin police are still investigating how a 1997 Toyota Camry with no license plates ended up in the Fox River early Monday morning.
Elgin fire officials arrived to the scene shortly after 7 a.m. Monday on National Street just east of Route 31, according to incident commander Bryan McMahan.
The fire department received multiple calls by witnesses who spotted a car in the river. When crews arrived, most of the car was submerged.
“We're not exactly sure how the car got in there, who put it there or when,” McMahan said.
The South Elgin Fire Department assisted Elgin as water rescue and recovery teams searched the car and the water around it for a driver or any passengers.
No bodies were found, according to McMahan.
Once crews finished their search, Artie's Towing pulled the car out of the water. McMahan said fire officials stayed on scene until about 9:30 a.m.
Though the plates had been removed from the vehicle, the vehicle identification number was still available, which the police department is using in its investigation.
Police department spokeswoman Sue Olafson said police are still trying to locate the driver of the vehicle and trying to determine how it went into the water.
