Dachshund Derby coming to Round Lake Beach
A Round Lake Beach pet store is planning a party to celebrate animals affectionately known as wiener dogs as a way to help raise money for the Avon Township food pantry.
All varieties of wiener dogs are invited, such as dachshunds, basset hounds and corgis to the party at Petland, 815 E. Rollins Road on Sunday, June 26.
Participants are asked to provide a minimum $5 donation to the Avon Township food pantry for all racer and pet costume competitors. Gifts will go to participants who provide what organizers consider larger donations.
Wiener dogs will be eligible for first-, second- and third-place prizes for the racing and the categories in the best-dressed pets. The first 100 participants will receive a canine “swag bag” to commemorate their effort to feed the township.
During the dachshund races, Petland will have an all-breed dog costume contest. Categories will include funniest, best team spirit and unique.
Round Lake Beach police officer Ken Rydz and his canine partner, Gunnar, are expected to attend. In addition, a representative from TOPS Kennel in Grayslake has been invited to provide a police dog demonstration.
Concessions will be available for purchase during the derby to benefit Lake Villa Boy Scout Troop 323.
