Passenger traffic is soaring at Rockford airport
Chicago Rockford International Airport saw a 12 percent increase in passengers in May, the sixth-straight month of year-over-year growth.
Destinations like Cancun might be one reason why passengers are flocking to Rockford's international airport.
Passenger traffic this year is up 23 percent over last year. More than 96,000 people have flown in and out of the airport so far this year. Traffic for May alone was up 12 percent over last May.
Airport officials say increases in passengers to Cancun and Orlando were particularly noteworthy. Last month, Apple Vacations added flights to Cancun and Allegiant offered more to Orlando.
Apple's weekly Rockford-to-Cancun flights take a break after June. But they'll be back in late December for the winter tourism season, along with service to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
