City Issues Storm Update

Naperville Experiences Minimal Damage from Severe Thunderstorms on Tuesday, June 21

The City of Naperville experienced minimal storm damage from the severe weather that moved through the area the evening of Tuesday, June 21. No structural damage was reported from the thunderstorms, which brought 60 to 70 mile per hour winds and heavy rains to the City.

The Department of Public Works has had approximately 50 service requests for damage to trees. Six separate power outages were reported in the City, with a total of 826 customers out of approximately 58,000 affected. Outages were due to downed power lines and fallen tree limbs making contact with power lines. As of early this morning, power was restored to all Naperville utility customers. The largest outage was in the River Road area south of Sunnybrook Drive and north of Aurora Avenue. The Department of Public Utilities-Electric had full crews working throughout the night to restore power, in addition to sending a crew to Winnetka to assist with restoring power in that community.

“Severe weather can strike anywhere at any time, with little warning,” Community Relations Manager Nadja Lalvani said. “This is an excellent opportunity for families to review their plans for when severe weather strikes. Please review your family emergency plan and check the contents of your family disaster supply kit. Taking proactive steps now is important to be prepared in the event of an emergency. During and immediately prior to severe weather incidents, residents should tune in to their preferred local media outlet, NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service website at www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/ for the latest weather updates.”

The City also encourages all residents to develop a safety plan for use in your home, workplace, school and vehicle. The city has produced an Emergency Preparedness Guide to assist residents in creating a plan. A copy of this document is available on the city's website at www.naperville.il.us/emergencyprepguide.aspx.
