Budget-cutting talk forgotten for raise

In a June 8 Daily Herald article, “Naperville council tables mechanical amusement tax increase,” Councilman Doug Krause said he couldn’t believe his peers would opt out of collecting any revenue. Krause said, “I just want to reiterate that we have a budget shortfall in the next few years and you guys are cutting sources of revenue.”

Fast forward one day to a June 9 article, “Naperville Mayor, 3 council members accept pay hikes.” Ironic how the councilman is so concerned about a budget shortfall when he wants to implement a tax increase, but fails to highlight that same shortfall when it comes to accepting a raise for himself.

Could someone politely pull Councilman Krause aside and inform him that pay increases actually exacerbate the budget shortfall issue he was so concerned about just a day earlier. It was Abraham Lincoln who said, “Moral principle is a looser bond than pecuniary interest.”
