'Jack's Team' has Chicago Marathon spots available
Marathon runners all have their own unique motivation and drive that causes them to place one foot in front of the other for 26.2 miles. Some runners are still looking for that great inspiration to run a marathon and experience the joy and exhilaration of accomplishing one of life's great challenges.
On Oct. 9, 25 people will have that “dare to be great” opportunity. While the Bank of America Chicago Marathon has been “sold out” for months, there are a few prime spots remaining open to runners who want to join “Jack's Team” and help raise funds for the Jack H. Marston II Melanoma Fund.
As a novice runner myself, I cautiously, and rather timidly, began to run only a few years ago. On a whim, I decided to enter my first marathon, the Illinois Marathon, on May 1, 2010. The joy and incredible sense of accomplishment I felt in completing a marathon has hooked me for life.
Last October, I had the honor and privilege of running the Chicago Marathon as a member of Jack's Team. I was inspired and motivated to not only finish the race, but did so with the additional knowledge that I was raising funds to help millions of people all around the world. When I hit the proverbial “wall” late in the race, it was great to know that I had a very important reason to keep placing one, very tired, foot in front of the other.
The mission of the Jack H. Marston Melanoma Fund states “We envision a world where every adult and child is aware of the risks of melanoma and takes preventative measures; where those who suffer from melanoma receive comfort and healing; and ultimately, where every case of melanoma will be completely curable.” According to the fund, “Jack's Team members seek to raise funds that support programs to raise awareness, fund research, and promote healing. “
If you are still looking for a very special opportunity to get into the game and run in the Chicago Marathon you can join Jack's Team and get in the race, but time is running out! In order to secure a spot in the race, interested runners should register for the team at www.jacksfund.org by June 30, 2011. Other questions about Jack's Team, or the fund itself, can be directed to Amy Saletta by email at amy@jacksfund.org or by telephone at (630) 853-9272.
