Man accused of placing bomb outside police station

CHICAGO — A 19-year-old Chicago man is being held in a federal detention center for possession of an unregistered destructive device.

Sergio Chaves is accused of planting a bomb outside an Evanston police station.

Chaves appeared Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Mason, who ordered him held pending a detention hearing.

Chaves is accused of leaving a bomb, containing explosives from fireworks as well as 40 nails, glass shards and a .22-caliber bullet, in a garbage can Saturday outside the police station. It was defused by the Cook County sheriff's bomb squad.

According to federal authorities, Chaves on Saturday called Evanston police several times about the bomb before agreeing to meet with police.

Authorities said they searched his room at his home and found items similar to those in the bomb.
