Medicare proposal is no moderate plan

I called Sen. Mark Kirk’s Washington office recently to inquire how he voted on May 25 on a Senate motion to consider Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget and was informed that the senator had voted “yes.” When asked whether this indicated that Sen. Kirk was in favor of the Ryan plan to privatize Medicare, the gentleman who answered the phone in the senator’s office in Washington told me the senator was indeed in favor of Ryan’s plan.

I find this position quite surprising for a moderate senator from Illinois. Perhaps it’s time for Sen. Kirk to review the history of Medicare and understand the reasons that it was enacted.
