Barley House closes in Algonquin Commons
The Barley House, an Algonquin restaurant and bar noted for its large selection of beers, has closed.
The establishment made the announcement on its website and Facebook page.
The Barley House was the second restaurant to occupy that location, an outlot in the Algonquin Commons outdoor shopping center on Randall Road. The first restaurant was Claddagh Irish Pub. The Barley House opened in January 2009 after Claddagh closed.
“It's economy-related,” Algonquin Village President John Schmitt said. “The restaurant business is down everywhere. They were kind of the new kid on the block.”
Schmitt did not think the location was a factor.
“They had a similar business model as the Claddagh, so I'm guessing that had something to do with it,” he said. “Biaggi's (an Italian restaurant) is doing well, and they're right next door.”
Barley House management could not be reached for comment, and the Algonquin Commons' management could not provide insight on the reasons the restaurant closed.
Inland Real Estate, the company that manages the Commons, did note that the Algonquin Commons has continued to attract new businesses, including a new department store and a discount clothing store.
“They will be up to a 90-percent occupancy rate,” said Ben Mason, a planner for the village of Algonquin. “That's a very healthy rate.”
The Barley House is selling its barware and decor from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 2214 Barrett Drive in Algonquin.
