Lawmakers fail to see the contradiction

Today I am reading opposite the editorial page, and I see one headline “BUDGET: Pension reform has to wait, lawmakers say,” and right below that I see another headline “State lawmakers pass Dream Act”.

The first says we have not got the money or the will to solve our pension deficit problem. They say they want to provide “a long-term solution” and the legislature must kick the can down the road again because of pressure from the unions.

The second says the legislators have decided that we can give away the few tax dollars we have to help undocumented students attend college. “These students deserve an opportunity. They work hard. We send them through grade school, we send them through high school, then we slam the door in their face.”

On the one hand the legislature has not got the resources or the will to straighten out a huge financial problem, and on the other hand they have tax money to spend on people who are not even citizens. Does anyone see the disconnect here? The utter failure of our legislators to do what they were elected to do instead of playing politics with our tax dollars?

We voters need to do some real hard soul searching before the next election, and if we re-elect these people who can’t do what they were hired to do, but always seem to find money to finance their vote getting projects to keep them in office, we need to have our heads examined. Mr. Madigan and his crowd got us here and we expect they will get us out. I believe that comes real close to the definition for insanity.
