2 teens charged with impersonating police in South Elgin
Two 19-year-olds are in hot water after pretending to be cops and telling people via loudspeaker on Randall Road in South Elgin to pull over, police said.
Jeffrey S. Stolzenburg of the 37W200 block of Redgate Road, and Michael R. McSweeney of the 7N600 block of Cloverfield Circle, both of St. Charles, were charged Wednesday with felony false impersonation of a police officer, according to police.
South Elgin Police Sgt. Mike Doty said authorities were called at 8:20 p.m. to Randall and Silver Glen roads for a report of two people in a gold Chevy Malibu telling motorists over a loud speaker to move over and making siren noises with their mouths through the speaker.
A motorist followed the vehicle, which was driven by McSweeney, into a parking lot and police arrested them, Doty said.
Doty said no one was injured and McSweeney and Stolzenburg didn’t approach any stopped vehicles pretending to be police. “(But) it did cause people to pull over. It is alarming and disturbing for people to think they’re being pulled over,” he said.
Bail was set Thursday at $1,000 for each and they are due in court June 22.
The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison, but probation is an option, if convicted.
Louis Morelli, Stolzenburg’s defense attorney, declined to comment Thursday. It was not clear who represents McSweeney.
According to court records, McSweeney was in the county’s Second Chance Program after his arrest in July 2010 for breaking into a car to steal a GPS device. His sentence also included 200 hours community service.
