Samardzija gets crack at setup man spot

Lost amid the Cubs’ roster shuffling is that reliever Jeff Samardzija is getting first crack at Kerry Wood’s job as the top right-handed setup man.

Samardzija is 2-for-2, having worked a perfect eighth inning Monday and a scoreless 10th Tuesday in picking up the victory as the Cubs beat the Brewers 5-4. He’s now 5-2.

Wood is on the disabled list with a finger blister.

“I’ve always said it’s nice to have an idea of when you’re going to pitch,” Samardzija said. “I’ve always kind of battled with, ‘Am I going to pitch today or no?’ It’s kind of an up-and-down thing in the bullpen sometimes. But when you have a good idea of how the game’s going, it’s easier to get ready.

“As a pitcher, it’s hard not to look at your numbers and judge your season on that. But I’ve really stayed away from that. I’ve looked at my season as a whole. When I have given up runs, how did they come? And how did I feel on those days when I gave up some runs? Honestly, I can’t think of too many times when I didn’t like how I felt on the mound and how I was attacking the hitters.”

Speed to burn: Rookie outfielder Tony Campana led off the bottom of the 10th with a double down the left-field line. After Kosuke Fukudome sacrificed, Campana came home on Starlin Castro#146;s single to right center.#147;Speed always brings energy,#148; Cubs manager Mike Quade said.More moves: The Cubs selected right-handed reliever Chris Carpenter from Class AA Tennessee and optioned right-hander Casey Coleman to Class AAA Iowa.Carpenter, 25, made his major league debut in the eighth and allowed an inherited runner to score. The Cubs also activated outfielder Reed Johnson off the DL and optioned outfielder Tyler Colvin to Iowa. Carpenter opened the season at Iowa, where he battled control issues. #147;It#146;s been kind of an up-and-down year,#148; he said. #147;After I got sent back down to Tennessee, I told myself to keep doing what you#146;ve been doing all your life and don#146;t let it get to you, and things paid off.#148; A little sore: Second baseman Darwin Barney sat out with a sore left knee, courtesy of his slide Monday that scored the only run of the game. Book it: Cubs radio announcer Pat Hughes, along with co-author Rich Wolfe, has a new book out about late Cubs great Ron Santo. #147;Ron Santo: A Perfect 10,#148; is available at Chicago-area Jewel food stores and Binny#146;s beverage stores.
