Company wants to build east-central Ill. wind farm

DANVILLE — A Chicago-based energy company wants to build a wind farm with more than 130 turbines in east-central Illinois.

Vermilion County Board Chairman Jim McMahon says Invenergy has submitted an application for a permit to put up more than 100 of those turbines in Vermilion County.

An Invenergy spokesman says the company plans to submit a separate application to Champaign County this summer to put another 30 turbines in the eastern part of Champaign County.

Invenergy officials say the company believes the area is a good location for a wind project, with an excellent wind resource and strong community support.

The project would be Invenergy's second largest U.S. wind farm. A wind farm in Texas is larger.
