It’s official: Sox put Peavy on DL

Carlos Quentin’s big night alone should have been enough to beat a Mariners team that has one of the worst offensive attacks in baseball.

The White Sox’ right fielder hit 2 homers and drove in 3 runs Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field, but one bad inning each from starter Gavin Floyd and closer Sergio Santos proved to be too costly in a 7-4 loss in 10 innings.

Not only did Quentin extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his 16th and 17th home runs of the season, he also leads the major leagues with 37 extra-base hits.

“When Carlos is the way he is, he can carry the ballclub,” manager Ozzie Guillen said after the Sox failed to sweep the three-game series against Seattle. “Hopefully we can keep him there.”

After Quentin’s 2-run shot tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth inning, Santos came on and held the Mariners down in the ninth.

In the 10th inning, Santos allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and a walk to take the loss.

“Q put us in a position to win that game,” Santos said. “I didn’t have it today. I just didn’t feel sharp. No excuses.”

Floyd was rolling along until allowing 3 runs in sixth, snapping his scoreless innings streak against Seattle at 27.

Jake-ing itAs expected, the White Sox placed starting pitcher Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 6) with a strained right adductor. Peavy was cruising through Sunday#146;s start against the Tigers, not allowing a hit over 3 innings. He injured himself in the fourth but stayed in the game and wound up allowing 6 runs on 3 hits and 3 runs.In retrospect, Peavy should have exited the game as soon as he felt the injury, but Sox general manager Kenny Williams said he#146;s not upset with the 30-year-old pitcher.#147;I know what to expect; it#146;s Jake Peavy,#148; Williams said. #147;You can#146;t acquire someone knowing that he#146;s got that bulldog attitude, and have that be one of the reasons you acquired him, and at the same time when it doesn#146;t work in your favor, be critical of him.#148;Williams said Peavy is going to need to make a minor-league rehab start before coming off the DL.Lucas Harrell was recalled from Class AAA Charlotte to take Peavy#146;s roster spot.Rios returns:After sitting out two games while riding a 2-for-17 slump, center fielder Alex Rios was back in the lineup Wednesday night.Rios was 1-for-4, raising his batting average to .200.While Adam Dunn has handled his slow start fairly well on the mental side, Rios has been noticeably down.#147;It#146;s frustrating,#148; he said. #147;I#146;m embarrassed right now. It#146;s something I didn#146;t expect. The team counts on you and every single player and when you don#146;t do good, it doesn#146;t mean you don#146;t want to do good. It#146;s something that happening right now.#148;Sox lose Marquez:When Mark Teahen was activated off the disabled list Sunday, the White Sox designated pitcher Jeff Marquez for assignment and hoped he wouldn#146;t be claimed off waivers.Didn#146;t happen.Marquez was claimed by the Yankees, the same team that traded him to the Sox in 2008 for Nick Swisher. Marquez was out of minor-league options and had to clear waivers before returning to Triple-A Charlotte.Marquez didn#146;t pitch for the Sox after coming up from Charlotte on May 30. He was 3-4 with a 3.97 ERA and 1 complete game in 9 starts in the minors.
