Electoral college should be abolished

The people should elect the president. With one exception the Electoral College was rejected every time it was proposed during the Federal Convention in 1787.

But James Madison voted that it was then rejected by the majority of delegates. Our president was to be elected for one seven-year term by Congress until the final form of our Constitution was written by a committee of 11, which replaced this mode of electing our president with the Electoral College that had been rejected by the majority of delegates.

James Madison and a number of delegates favored the direct election of our President by the people, Our seventh president wanted his Congress to write legislation so that the Electoral College would no defeat the choice of the people. This has now happened four times in our short history.

This will never happen again if Fred Thompson and the several states are successful in abolishing the Electoral College. The American people will then elect the president and every vote will count. Presently if you live in a blue state and are a Republican your vote will not count. All of the electoral votes will go to the Democratic candidate and vice versa. If you are a Democrat in a red state your vote will not count.

The abolishment of the Electoral College is long overdue. Let’s hope that Fred Thompson and the states that are for its abolishment can make this happen.
