Business exec resigns as Notre Dame trustee

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A woman elected to the University of Notre Dame board of trustees six weeks ago has resigned after being criticized about donations she gave to groups such as EMILY'S List, which supports female candidates who back abortion rights.

The university announced Wednesday that Roxanne Martino had resigned effective immediately. She says she is resigning because the controversy surrounding her election to the board, which has more than 50 members, wouldn't allow her to be effective. She says she is committed to all aspects of Catholic teaching and to the mission of Notre Dame.

Martino is president and chief executive officer of Aurora Investment Management in Chicago. She received her bachelor's degree in business from Notre Dame.
