White Sox’ Peavy headed for DL again

It’s not yet official, but White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy is heading back to a familiar spot — the disabled list.

After straining his right groin Sunday while facing the Detroit Tigers, Peavy wasn’t overly optimistic about making his next scheduled start, Saturday against the Oakland Athletics.

When the 30-year-old right-hander does land on the DL, he will miss at least 1 more start. Peavy had an MRI on Monday that revealed a “mild” strain, but he still wasn’t feeling overly great Tuesday.

“I can tell you I feel a lot better,” Peavy said. “But I just saw the doctor and think we have to go the conservative route. Obviously, I wanted to push through it and do what we needed to do, but I think we’re looking at the disabled list just because of the MRI results and how sore my exam was with the doctor.

“Cooler heads will prevail in those meetings and I just had a nice talk with my general manager (Kenny Williams) and doctors. Disappointing, no doubt. I was feeling good and beginning to climb with my arm.”

Draft update:The White Sox made 29 picks in the first-year player draft Tuesday after taking switch-hitting outfielder Keenyn Walker with the No. 47 overall selection Monday night.In Rounds 2-5, the Sox took college pitchers. They grabbed Ian Gardeck, another collegiate pitcher in Round 8. The right-hander went to Crystal Lake South High School and lives in Lake in the Hills.Pitching was definitely a need for the White Sox.#147;I think nine of our first 12 were pitchers,#148; said Doug Laumann, the White Sox#146; scouting director. #147;I was happy; I thought the strength of the draft was in the pitching.#148;Interestingly, 29 of the Sox#146; 30 draft picks so far are college players.#147;In the past couple of years we#146;ve taken some high school guys,#148; Laumann said. #147;We thought it was important a couple years ago to take a few and get them mixed in, the Trayce Thompsons and some of those types of kids, and last year we took a few more.#147;The way our system is set up there has got to be places for those kids to play. If you get too many, there just isn#146;t playing time.#148;Ozney still on the board:Ozney Guillen, youngest son of White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, didn#146;t sign after being drafted by the team on the 22nd round last June. This year Ozney still hasn#146;t been picked through 30 rounds.Playing at Miami Dade Junior College this year, Ozney batted .347 with 33 RBI in 44 games.But he#146;s projected as either a corner outfielder or a corner infielder in pro ball, and he only hit 1 home run this season while swinging an aluminum bat.#147;He#146;s on our board still,#148; Laumann said. #147;We took him 22 last year and the depth of the draft this year was considerably better. We#146;ll see where it falls (Wednesday).#148;
