Cougars end trip with 7-1 loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Kane County Cougars suffered a 7-1 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Sunday at Parkview Field.

The Cougars were outhit 14-4 and ended their six-game road trip with a 2-4 mark. They finished a stretch in which they played 15 of 19 games on the road, going 12-7.

The Cougars’ Leonel Santiago (4-6) suffered his second consecutive losing start. He had given up 6 runs on 10 hits Tuesday and allowed 6 runs on 11 hits Sunday.

The all-star right-hander yielded 3 in the fourth inning and 3 more during Fort Wayne’s 4-run seventh. Santiago struck out four and walked none in 6-plus innings. Chas Byrne gave up 1 run in 2 relief innings.

The Cougars (25-32) went 1-2-3 four times and sent the minimum to the plate five times. Ryan Stovall led off the ninth with a double and scored the Cougars’ only run on a throwing error.

Mark Hardy (3-4) notched the win for the TinCaps (25-31), and Matt Jackson pitched 3 innings to earn his first save.

The Cougars are off today. They start a six-game homestand Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with the opener of a three-game set against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (30-27).
