Springfield using buildings as cooling centers

SPRINGFIELD — Officials in Springfield are reminding residents that several city buildings have been designated cooling centers this week as temperatures are expected to reach the mid 90s.

The State Journal-Register reports that the Municipal Center East is open round-the-clock for people who need a place to cool off. Other buildings, including the Lincoln Library and the Municipal Center West are available for people needing a cool spot during the day.

Mayor Mike Houston says in a news release that it is important to check on elderly friends, relatives and neighbors to make sure they are safe.
