Prince of Peace plans rummage sale
Life’s full of transitions, and chances are the Prince of Peace Rummage Sale has that much-needed item to fill one of life’s many transitions at a fraction of what it would cost retail.
“Business suits for people transitioning into new jobs; children’s clothing for young families; dorm stuff for college kids; washers and dryers for young couples starting on their own; and rare finds for the treasure seeker — no matter what need you’re trying to fill, we got it,” said Stefanie Koenig, one of the main organizers of one of Lake County’s largest rummage sales.
The Prince of Peace Rummage Sale, at routes 83 and 132 in Lake Villa, is set for June 9-10 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and June 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds benefit Prince of Peace Parish and School.
Thousands of items fill the 26-acre site. Appliances, tools, and mechanical equipment fill rows of tents on the lawn; bikes, mowers, and sporting gear line the parking lot; furniture packs the gymnasium; double-stacked tables feature kitchenware; and mounds of clothing, toys, antiques, and other collectibles swell eight classrooms.
Televisions, stereos, phones, radios, microwaves, and computer equipment are all tested and function properly. Small business owners can also find an array of office furniture, equipment and storage units.
Cars, minivans, boats, and campers have also found their way to the rummage sale.
“It amazes me how much we get that is brand new. We have piles of shoes and purses, and racks of coats, and evening and prom dresses that still have the tags on them,” Koenig noted.
Since January, a muscle brigade of volunteers has been traveling across Lake, Cook and McHenry counties picking up and storing donations. More than 200 volunteers will spend a week before the sale unloading semi-trucks, pitching tents, building racks, setting up tables, testing electronics, and sorting through tons of donations for the indoor-outdoor sale.
School parents, parishioners, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, student baby sitters, community members, local business owners, and even volunteers from neighboring churches pitch in for the extravaganza, now in its 15th year.
Lake County Radio Station WXLC (102.3 FM) will be on hand for a live, on-site broadcast from 10 a.m. to noon. Thursday, June 9. On Saturday, June 11, many items will be further discounted when customers can fill bags or boxes for a small charge. Following the sale, leftover items are donated again to the Veteran’s Administration and other charities, such as women’s shelters or children’s organizations, or to other local rummage sales.
For a nominal charge, a truck will also be available to transport larger items to people’s homes. For information, call (847) 356-6111 or email poprummagesale@yahoo.com.
