Americans’ rights slipping away
It is easy to be distracted by the fight to survive in the current economic and political climate and ignore the well-orchestrated attack on our basic freedoms by our legislators, corporations, IMF.
Wisconsin is still in the news now wanting to change voting rules to include ID cards that many legitimate voters won’t have. Michigan’s governor has recently dissolved a community’s elected government under the guise of saving the lakefront community from financial disaster. Our own suburbs are having their revenues stolen by the state because of serious fiscal problems.
We barely need to read between the lines to see how our rights and freedoms are being infringed, no, taken away.
The Patriot Act was only the beginning. I am reminded of an article explaining how to catch a wild pig. You throw corn on the forest floor. The pigs come. A bit later you place a fence on one side of that area and more corn. The pigs come back and get used to the fence and keep eating. Then another side of the fence is placed and more corn and this continues until the pigs are surrounded by the fence. Is this our future?
What will it take to get Americans past their shock and anger and transform themselves into effective defenders of their inalienable rights?
