Tips to make your vacation safe

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois and national officials are urging people to prepare for possible emergencies before they head out on vacation.

The state Emergency Management Agency and National Weather Service say research about a destination can help people plan. Officials say travelers should also prepare for natural or weather disasters that are challenging in unfamiliar territory.

Officials say travelers should pack an emergency supply kit and extra supplies such as prescriptions. They also should inform family and friends of their itinerary. During a trip visitors should stay aware of weather, know the names of locales traveling through and check escape routes of hotels.
