70-year sentence for Halloween party death

A Cook County judge has sentenced a man to 70 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of a DePaul University student in 2009.

Cook County Judge Matthew Coghlan sentenced Berly Valladares on Thursday to 55 years in prison for the death of Francisco Valencia outside a Halloween party. The judge also gave Valladares 15 years in prison for the shooting of Valencia's girlfriend.

Jurors convicted Valladares of first-degree murder in September.

Prosecutors alleged Valladares supplied the TEC-9 to another man who became upset at being asked to leave the party. That man returned with the gun and opened fire.

Before sentencing the judge said he thinks Valladeros is "a danger to society."

Valencia was a 21-year-old political science major.
