Vista Health System unveils new Progressive Care Unit at Vista East

Vista Health System recently unveiled its fully remodeled Progressive Care Unit (PCU) on the fifth floor of Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. The new PCU, designed primarily for heart patients, features 26 all-private rooms with deluxe amenities. A number of local officials joined Vista administrators, staff and physicians for a ribbon-cutting ceremony held May 31.

“We're continuing to improve the patient's experience at Vista,” said Barbara J. Martin, president and chief executive officer, Vista Health System. “This represents a significant investment in capital by Vista that will benefit the people of Waukegan and the surrounding communities.”

The new PCU will make it easier for Vista's doctors and nurses to monitor and care for their patients. Continuous surveillance and monitoring of each patient's heart is provided from a central location. Also, a new pneumatic tube system will deliver supplies and medical documents directly to the nurses' station.

Construction began during the winter and was recently completed. The refurbished patient rooms include modern furniture, high definition TVs and individual bathrooms with walk-in showers.

“We know that patients' first and foremost concern is getting the best care available,” Martin said at the ribbon cutting. “And at Vista, we have consistently delivered on that promise with the finest doctors, nurses and treatment capabilities. At the same time, patients today prefer private rooms with the latest conveniences. The new PCU demonstrates our commitment to creating that kind of environment.”

Patients on the current PCU on the second floor will be relocated to the new unit soon. The second floor will be remodeled to temporarily accommodate the Maternity Program during construction of a state-of-the-art New Family Center. Also under construction at Vista East is a Same-Day Surgery and Wound Care Unit that is expected to open later this year.

Other pending developments include the addition of the latest and most advanced da Vinci robotic surgical system at Vista East. At Vista's Lindenhurst location, state approval is expected soon to allow the opening of the new Freestanding Emergency Center.

“We're proud to be a major healthcare provider in Lake Country, and we plan to continue growing stronger and better,” Martin said.
