Fremd student stabbed as dozens watch at Inverness park

An 18-year-old Fremd High School student was stabbed last week at an Inverness park as dozens gathered to watch a scheduled fight between two other teens.

The altercation broke out about 4 p.m. Thursday at South Park, located just east of Ela Road at Thompson Way, Inverness Police Chief Bob Haas said.

The victim, whose identity isn’t being released, was stabbed in the side with a pocketknife by a 16-year-old Fremd student.

Friends took him to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he had surgery to see if any vital organs had been punctured, Haas said. He was released the following day.

Haas said police have been conducting interviews over the past couple days and will contact the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office to see if any charges should be filed.

The 16-year-old was released into the custody of his parents pending the investigation’s outcome, Haas said.

Haas estimated between 50 and 60 teens showed up at South Park to watch the fight, which was originally scheduled to take place in Hoffman Estates.

“We’re not sure why they picked South Park,” Haas said. “None of the kids we talked to have been from Inverness.”

Haas called the stabbing an isolated event.
