Elgin police search for driver who caused crash

Elgin police are searching for the driver who caused a rollover accident Wednesday morning on Route 20 in Elgin, according to police officials.

Elgin Police Department spokeswoman Sue Olafson said the driver attempted to change lanes, hitting the rear end of a 2003 Nissan Xterra. The driver of the Nissan lost control and the vehicle spun sideways then rolled over, coming to a stop on the bridge over Poplar Creek in the Cook County portion of Elgin, Olafson said.

The driver of the Nissan, a South Elgin resident, was taken to Sherman Hospital with non–life-threatening injuries, Olafson said.

The first driver left the scene after the accident.

“They are still looking for the car that changed lanes and essentially caused the accident,” Olafson said.

Police continue to investigate and are following up on several leads, according to Olafson.

Route 20 was closed for about 20 minutes while emergency responders cleared the area after the 9 a.m. crash.
