Elgin panel to discuss bicycle issues

The City of Elgin Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee invites you to a panel discussion about bike and pedestrian issues in the Chicago area.

It will be held from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. Friday, June 10, in the Heritage Ballroom at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. It will be followed by a trail ride until 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested.

A number of municipalities have recently created, or are thinking about creating commissions to address and promote biking/walking and therefore we will hear from those in the trenches on how to go about creating advocate committees and learn what has and hasn’t worked from each other.

This event is open to the general public and will be of interest to urban planners, engineers, architects, municipal staff, transportation professionals, students, and other interested individuals. Bring your bike and join a group ride on the Fox River Bike Trail afterward.

Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, will spend the first hour giving an overview of the following topics: bike plan implementation strategies and avoiding pitfalls; quick overview on the main funding sources and strategies for winning grants; Bicycle Friendly Community national designation and strategies for getting there; and a quick overview on some available resources for educating cyclists/motorists.

The second hour, panelists from various municipalities will discuss their individual successes with a variety of activities and plans. The panelists include: Tom Armstrong, senior planner, Active Transportation Alliance; Richard M. Bascomb, senior transportation planner, village of Schaumburg; Nathan Roseberry, senior transportation engineer, village of Hoffman Estates; Jennifer McMahon, assistant city administrator, city of Warrenville; Jennifer Louden, project engineer, city of Naperville; and Paul Bednar, park development coordinator, city of Elgin.

Cost is $10, paid at the door. Checks should be made payable to City of Elgin. To RSVP, email bednar_p@cityofelgin.org by Monday, June 6.
