Naperville man killed while helping ducklings

A 38-year-old Naperville man was struck and killed by a limousine Monday morning as he attempted to move a family of ducklings off I-294, Illinois State Police officials said.

Edward Gardner, of the 1600 block of Lonsdale Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, a Cook County medical examiner’s office spokesman said.

Gardner was traveling north about 9:30 a.m. on the Tri-State in Schiller Park near O’Hare International Airport when he saw the animals, pulled over and got out of his car, Illinois State Police Sgt. Nick Hasan said.

A limousine, which police said was not speeding, struck Gardner. His girlfriend remained in the car and wasn’t injured, Hasan said.

An investigation is ongoing, but Hasan said no citations were issued to the limousine driver, who remained at the scene.
