Electricity rate hike OK’d by House

SPRINGFIELD — Electric rates would rise across much of the state under a modernization plan approved by the Illinois House.

The 67-47 vote Monday was not a veto-proof majority, however. Gov. Pat Quinn could block the measure if it reaches his desk.

First, it would have to be approved by the Senate.

The legislation lets ComEd and Ameren charge more to pay for improvements to the power grid. The changes are supposed to conserve energy and improve performance.

Many consumer groups oppose the plan.

They say it would let the companies collect to big a profit. They also fear it would virtually guarantee rate increases every year.
