Cross' concussion plan goes to Quinn

SPRINGFIELD — An effort to try to prevent concussions among high school athletes was approved by the Illinois House Sunday and goes to Gov. Pat Quinn for final review.

The plan comes from House Republican Leader Tom Cross of Oswego and would require schools to teach coaches, athletes and parents about the dangers of concussions.

The issue of concussions among athletes, especially football players, has been highlighted by the NFL in recent years.

Former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson committed suicide earlier this year, and a study has since suggested he suffered from brain damage from his time in the NFL.

Duerson's teammate, offensive lineman Kurt Becker, lobbied in Springfield in support of Cross' plan.

It was approved by a 114-0 vote. Quinn gets the final say.

Under the plan, school boards would also have to adopt policies concerning student concussions.
