Motorcyclists could be exempt from balky red lights
SPRINGFIELD — Illinois motorcyclists might get permission to drive through red lights that refuse to turn green.
Thousands of Illinois traffic lights are triggered by weight. Sometimes they don’t register motorcycles and a red light never turns green.
So bikers want permission to go through a red light after they’ve stopped and waited a reasonable time.
The state Senate voted 43-12 on Wednesday to grant the bikers’ request, except in Chicago. The measure now goes to the House, which has approved the idea in the past.
Opponents question the safety of letting motorcycles go through a red light when oncoming drivers think they have a clear right of way.
