Libertyville’s Van Roeyen finds future at Augustana

One of the recruits for Augustana’s 2011-12 women’s basketball team will be quite used to winning.

In fact, Valerie Van Roeyen lost only once in her senior season for Libertyville High School and coach Kathie Swanson.

The 5-foot-8 guard has decided to study education in Rock Island and become a member of coach Bobbi Endress’ Viking basketball program.

Van Roeyen was the captain this winter for the Wildcats, who won their first 29 game before falling to Zion-Benton in the sectional smeifnals.

She was a 48 percent shooter from the field and converted 62 percent from the free throw line, averaging 5.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

Van Roeyen earned All-North Suburban Conference honorable mention as well as the league’s Sportsmanship Award.

Von Roeyen also qualified for state in the IHSA Class 4A Three-Point Showdown.

She also was also a two-year letter winner in coach Scott Schinto’s soccer program at Libertyville. The midfielder and defender was named Rookie of the Year and earned All-Suburban North honorable mention as a junior.

She is a North Suburban Conference All-Academic honoree in basketball and soccer.

Libertyville baseball camps

Libertyville High School coach Jim Schurr will host a baseball camp with his staff and current college players on Tuesday June 7, Friday, June 10 and Monday June 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Butler Lake Little League Complex.

The camp will be broken down for ages 7 through 14 Little League youth and travel players. There will be three different sessions covering overall skills ($90), pitching ($40) and catching ($30) or all three for $150.

The camp on Monday, June 13 will accommodate District 70 students.

Women’s track and field

Eastern Illinois University senior Kris Gehrke (Wauconda) finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference high jump at Murray State with a leap of 6-8. He also finished third in the 400 hurdles.

Eastern won its third consecutive outdoor conference championship title. Gehrke also competed at the Louisville University Twilight meet and finished second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.31, and qualified to participate in the regional championship to be held at the University of Oregon on May 26-28.

Baseball

Concordia Chicago’s Nick Skala (St. Viator) was named the 2011 Northern Athletics Conference Position Player of the Year.

Skala, a junior catcher, leads the NAC in home runs (10), RBI (63) and is currently second in slugging percentage (. 678), runs scored (47) and hits (69) while posting the conference’s sixth-best batter average at .390.

Ÿ Cam Stephens (Leyden) was named Concordia Chicago Athlete of the Week, hitting .476 (10-21) over the final week of the season for the Cougars. He scored 4 runs and drove in seven, two on a home run in the conference tournament win against Concordia Wisconsin. Stephens led the team through the 45-game season with a .453 batting average and a .691 slugging percentage.

Men’s track and field

Kevin O’Brien (Palatine High School) of the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut has academically completed his third of four years at the Academy.

In addition to earning all-conference honors in track and field and cross country this year, and setting the Coast Guard Academy 10,000 meter record, O’Brien has been chosen as the Captain next year for the Cross Country and the Track teams.

At the conclusion of O’Brien’s track season he will report for summer duty to the United States Coast Guard Cutter Munro, a 378-foot cutter, for summer assignment as a junior officer in training.

The Wheeling High School Spur Club is presenting the

The 10th annual Summer Golf Outing & Dinner with silent/live auctions on Friday, July 22 at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.

There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and appetizers, dinner and auctions at 6:30 p.m.

Men’s track and field

North Central senior all-American Mike Spain (Schaumburg) will compete in next week’s NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. Spain currently has the top qualifying times in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. In the 5,000-meters Spain placed fourth at last season’s Outdoor Championships, and in the 10,000-meters Spain took sixth in 2009 and second last season.

Ÿ Eastern Illinois senior Patrick Tortorici (Conant) ran to a first place finish in the 400 hurdles (52.05) at the Louisville Cardinal Twilight. Tortorici locked up a berth in the NCAA West Regional to be held at the University of Oregon over the Memorial Day weekend.
