Sabra hummus to remain in DePaul cafeteria menus
After a student referendum failed to get the required votes to remove a brand of hummus from DePaul University cafeterias last week, school officials decided Sabra hummus will continue to be sold on campus.
DePaul’s Fair Business Practice Committee announced Monday it found no evidence Strauss Group, the co-owner of Sabra, gives financial support to two Israeli military units accused of human rights abuses.
The nonbinding referendum was pushed by Students for Justice in Palestine and was voted on last week during DePaul’s Student Government Association’s annual officer election ballot.
DePaul’s president, the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, said the students’ concerns were raised in good faith, but the university approaches such issues with deliberation and “then makes an informed decision.”
Strauss Group is Israel’s second-largest food and beverage company.
