Jail, probation in Beach Park break-in

A Chicago man was sentenced to 90 days in jail Monday after admitting he stole property from a Beach Park residence.

Shannon Jackson, 23, was also placed on a term of probation that will end when he is released from jail.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Tim Niehus said Jackson broke into the home of a female acquaintance on Sept. 8, 2010.

The woman told police she did not realize anything was missing from her home until several days later, when she discovered a watch, bracelet, camera and other property had been taken.

The woman contacted Jackson and demanded her property be returned, Niehus said, but Jackson denied having anything to do with the break-in.

However, Niehus said, when Lake County sheriff’s deputies went to question Jackson about the property, he was able to give the items to them.

Jackson was originally charged with residential burglary, which carries a mandatory prison sentence of four to 15 years, but Niehus said he agreed to reduce the charge in exchange for Jackson’s guilty plea.

Jackson pleaded guilty to felony theft during a hearing before Circuit Judge John Phillips.
