Health officials offer tips on pool safety
SRPINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging people to learn how to protect themselves from illnesses and other potential problems associated with swimming as public pools ready to open for the summer this weekend.
The department advises people to avoid swimming when they have diarrhea and to practice good hygiene by showering or bathing before swimming. Bacterial illnesses can be easily passed to other people through pool water.
The department also advises people to never swallow pool water.
Parents of young children should make sure they take kids on regular bathroom breaks and to change diapers away from the pool.
