Electrical arc blamed for Batavia fire
A faulty light fixture caused a fire around 10:50 p.m. Sunday in Batavia.
No one was injured.
The fire was in a house at 127 N. Mallory Ave. An electrical arc, caused by a pinched wire between a porcelain light base and metal electrical box on the ceiling in the basement, ignited materials in the basement, according to fire department officials.
A resident extinguished the fire by throwing pails of water on it, but there was heavy smoke left in the basement and moderate smoke on the first floor, which the fire department helped remove with fans.
The residents were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector.
The fire caused $10,000 damage to the house.
