Crews work to address outages in Ill., Mo.

EAST ST. LOUIS — Utility crews are making progress restoring electricity in Illinois and Missouri — a day after a strong storm pummeled the region, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

Ameren Illinois says as of Tuesday morning about 1,600 customers in southern Illinois were still without power. That's down from some 14,000 outages immediately after the Monday afternoon storm.

In Bethalto, officials say St. Louis Regional Airport's administration building was damaged by straight-line winds that topped 80 mph.

In Missouri, nearly 16,000 Ameren customers remained without electricity Tuesday morning, mostly around St. Louis. That's down from a peak of about 68,000 homes and businesses.
