We’re at our best when all respected

In response to George Nowak’s May 10 letter, to be honest, I have never understood the idea of wanting to fear God. If you live your life and make choices out of fear or potential reward you are making no choices because you are a good person. You are working for rewards or to stave off punishment. You are not moral at all.

Mr. Nowak’s letter speaks in support of a theocracy and one twisted (like most fundamentalists) to their own views and prejudices. They believe they have the only true view and everyone else is not only wrong, but “against God.” Everywhere throughout history where such people have had control, it has been a disaster.

This country is greatest when it lives up to its highest ideals, which is to make all Americans feel like they are respected and appreciated as citizens and where ideas are argued on their merits honestly.

It must be frightening to think you must justify a position rather than just assume people are required to blindly agree with you.
