Morality lesson from ‘Lord of the Rings’
I can’t muster up any joy at the death of Osama bin Laden. There is no doubt he was an evil man, according to the guidelines laid out by Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
I can’t have any joy over anyone’s violent death. The president says it was “justice,” but justice is as hard to define as to get.
For all you “Lord of the Rings” fans, I will borrow a quote from the series. Frodo declares that the ... “evil and self-serving Gollum deserved to die.” Gandalf the magician replies, “Deserves it! I dare say he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment for even the very wise cannot see all ends.”
