Ilinois Mother convicted of burning 16-month-old son

SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield woman has been jailed after she was found guilty of burning her son when he was 16 months old.

The State Journal-Register reports 25-year-old Cara Geckles was convicted Thursday of aggravated battery to a child causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery to a child causing disfigurement. She faces up to 30 years in prison.

Experts for the prosecution said the injuries to the son in 2008 weren't consistent with a sun burn. Prosecutors say the boy suffered burn to the right side of his back and forehead, some of them second-degree burns.

Geckles was sent to the Sangamon County Jail after the convictions to await sentencing.
