One language should be our goal
Shame on you, Daily Herald. What a surprise to find in my “English speaking community” daily paper a photograph with a heading in Spanish. (The May 5 article is on page 10 continued from a page 1 story describing Latino migration into the suburban area). I expect that people coming to America would strive to learn our language. We were once a country of multiple languages, and our ancestors worked long hours under adverse conditions to develop a strong national pride with mutual respect for all with one shared language (English). I expect nothing less from our community paper today!
Encourage pride in one language, one nation — quit trying to divide our community with individual pride of origin but rather a united pride in the uniqueness of this experiment in togetherness. America is strong because of that uniqueness and the recognition that each nationality has the same goals: education for all, strong family values, a faith to follow, justice for all, truth and honesty in all dealings and a language that all can use fluently. It is such a tried-and-true language that other countries have their children learn and model our language. Why would we undermine that same language?
To have my own community newspaper have an article headed with a picture in Spanish is totally out of touch and actually undermines the pride of my ancestors. My ancestors left Europe and came to America to become part of this great country by abandoning their native tongues, learning English and sharing a part in forming a more perfect union, the United States of America.
