Kids can check out trucks at Algonquin Commons

Don’t be alarmed if you see a big cluster of emergency vehicles along the Randall Road corridor in Algonquin this weekend.

The Algonquin Commons outdoor mall is hosting its second annual Touch-A-Truck event Sunday, May 22, with police cars, fire trucks and even the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine expected to give visitors a hands-on look at many different types of vehicles.

Everyone is welcome to get up-close and hands-on with the vehicles, even taking a turn sitting in the driver’s seat of the police cars, fire trucks and military vehicles.

They’ll also get to meet many of the people that use the vehicles every day.

While not all vehicles are guaranteed to be on site throughout the entire event — because you never know when an emergency may arise — there are many scheduled to be on site including a 30’ Peterbuilt tow truck, a 40’ Peterbuilt tow truck, a 1929 Model T Tow truck, an antique Model A pickup truck, the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, a police squad car, a police bicycle patrol, a police motorcycle, an ambulance, a fire truck with ladder, a security command vehicle, a dump truck, an ATV, a Bob Cat and a front end loader.

We all know some of the vehicles can be very noisy — it’s the nature of the job as they try to maneuver through traffic to get to an emergency.

You can expect the sirens and horns to be blasting on Sunday.

However, there also will be a special horn and siren free hour from 11 a.m. to noon, for people who prefer to avoid all of that noise.

There may be a few more vehicles available that day than those already scheduled, or some may be on call throughout the day and leave for a while as they go to a scene of an incident. However, throughout the day, there will always be some vehicles available for the public to get hands-on with, organizers say.

In addition to touching the trucks, organizers are also asking visitors to help stuff a truck.

They’re asking people to donate nonperishable food items at the event for the Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry.

There will also be retailer and food tables set up throughout the event.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
