Car rolls over in Elgin accident

A 73-year-old man ran a red light in Elgin Monday morning, causing an accident that sent him and his wife to a hospital, Elgin police said.

Thomas J. Lockinger, of Belvidere, drove through the intersection of Highland Avenue and State Street in Elgin at about 8:30 a.m. Monday, police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said. His wife was in a 2000 Chevrolet Ventura van with him.

An 18-year-old Elgin man driving a 1998 Ford Escort hit Lockinger’s van when he ran the light, causing the van to roll over and hit a parked car, according to police.

The Lockingers were taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with non-life-threatening injuries where they were treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Olafson said Lockinger was cited for disregarding the traffic light.

The intersection was closed for about an hour after the accident and has since been reopened.
